SGEU staff
still on the street!
SGEU locked-out its staff on Nov. 6, 2007.
- SGEU refuses to engage in meaningful collective bargaining. They refuse to agree to a mediator.
- SGEU is demanding that its workers accept a wage increase lower than the rate of inflation and give-up existing sick leave entitlements.
- Some SGEU leaders are scabbing by performing duties normally handled by locked-out staff.
- SGEU members are not receiving the professional services they pay for through their union dues.

- The 60 women and men who work for SGEU in Regina, Saskatoon, and Prince Albert are members of the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers’ Union (CEP) Local 481.

SGEU staff
locked-out!
What kind of union treats its own workers with such disrespect?
- SGEU has resorted to tactics used by only the worst employers. It has locked-out its workers in order to force take-aways at the bargaining table.
- The SGEU staff provide services to SGEU members. We bargain collective agreements, advocate for members in the workplace, administer SGEU’s Long Term Disability Plan, and provide many other services for SGEU members. We are unionized with CEP, the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers’ Union.
What is this dispute about?
- SGEU leaders are trying to dictate, not negotiate, a collective agreement.
- SGEU leaders want to force its workers to accept a wage increase of 0-1-2%, even though most SGEU members, and SGEU’s out-of-scope management, received 10.1%, plus bonuses, during the same period.
How will this lockout affect you?
- Short term – no services
- While SGEU staff are locked out, SGEU members will have no access to professional union services. For example, no one will be available to assist with workplace problems, handle grievances and arbitrations, or to provide Long Term Disability services.
- Long term – no ability to stand up for you at the bargaining table
- SGEU will have no credibility when it is time to stand up for you in the next round of bargaining. If SGEU practices concession bargaining -- and locks out its own staff -- your employer can feel justified in doing the same to you. SGEU is setting a new, regressive pattern for labour relations in this province. You and your co-workers will suffer the consequences in the long term.
It’s time to take a look at what is going on in your own union. SGEU leaders need to know that members expect more from them. Contact SGEU President Bob Bymoen at 539-0030 or bbymoen@sgeu.gov.sk.ca or the SGEU elected leaders listed on the back:

Urgent appeal to trade unionists

Help put an end to a destructive labour dispute
that is damaging the labour movement in our province
SGEU leaders locked out their staff on November 6, 2007. They then set up a “temporary” office in an expensive hotel in downtown Regina, and only shut that down when CEP members threatened to set up a legal picket line outside the hotel. We believe they will continue to attempt to carry on running business as usual in a new location. These anti-union, anti-worker tactics will have negative repercussions on the union movement as a whole for years to come. Unfortunately, the actions of SGEU will make all union leaders appear hypocritical and self-interested.
SGEU leaders are trying to force concessions on its workers, members of the Communications, Energy, and Paper Workers’ Union (CEP) Local 481. SGEU is offering the 60 women and men who work in its Regina, Saskatoon and Prince Albert offices a wage package of 0-1-2%, even though most SGEU members, and SGEU’s out-of-scope management, received 10.1%, plus bonuses, during the same period.
SGEU leaders will have no credibility when it is time to stand up for its own members -- 24,000 workers in 60 different bargaining units across the province. If SGEU practices concession bargaining -- and locks out its own staff – other employers, especially those who will be taking direction from a Brad Wall Saskatchewan Party government, can justify doing the same to other union members.
SGEU is setting a new, regressive pattern for labour relations in this province. We will all suffer the consequences in the long term.
Help get the labour movement back on track. Let SGEU leaders know that they are damaging the labour movement as a whole. Tell them that they have a duty to act like a trade union not like a bad boss.

Stranger than fiction!
SGEU locks-out its own workers!
- The Saskatchewan Government and General Employees’ Union (SGEU), one of the largest trade unions in the province, has locked-out its workers.
- SGEU leaders set up a “temporary” office in an expensive hotel in downtown Regina and only shut it down after its locked-out workers threatened to set up a legal picket line outside the hotel.
- SGEU staff have been trying to bargain a contract with SGEU leaders since 2005. They have been without a contract for two and a half years.
- SGEU leaders want to force their staff to accept a wage increase of 0-1-2%, even though most SGEU members, and SGEU’s out-of-scope management, received 10.1%, plus bonuses, during the same period.
- The 60 women and men who work in SGEU’s Regina, Saskatoon and Prince Albert offices are members of the Communication, Energy and Paperworkers’ Union (CEP).
- SGEU staff provide services to SGEU members. They bargain collective agreements, advocate for members in the workplace, administer SGEU’s Long Term Disability Plan, and provide many other services for SGEU members.
Let SGEU leaders know that their actions are too unbelievable. Let them know that a trade union should treat its own workers with respect. Contact SGEU President Bob Bymoen at 539-0030 or bbymoen@sgeu.gov.sk.ca or SGEU leaders listed on the back:
